Edmund Bacon (Kevin Bacon's father)
really liked the

carved and painted wood gravepost from Mahafaly, Madagascar

which he chose from the Museum's storeroom.
March 8, 1997

"From the ground it is a very clear vertical post, yet as you progress upward the design moves into the abstract in a harmonic flow. All the parts are free and independent so there is this sense of dissolved gravity. Yet this gravepost gives the feeling of going down all the way to the center of the earth."

Kevin adds: "The birds at the top are gorgeous. I think it is far more satisfying than a tombstone. If my mother had had a gravepost I think this is what she would have wanted."
