Benjamin Franklin studies his favorite

Iroquois beaded feather headdress collected in 1901 from Grand River, Ontario, Canada

found in the Museum's basement storeroom
March 3, 1999

"I'm fascinated with headdresses because of the attention that was paid to the fur hat I wore when I was in Paris. My hat created a fashion among the ladies of that city! This is a very exciting and beautiful headdress. I hope some of these feathers might be turkey feathers. I wanted the turkey to be the national bird because it was native to North America, was very resourceful, and not unattractive. I would like to know the position within the tribe of the person who was entitled to wear this headdress. I hope that it was worn for peace ceremonies."
