Jazz great
Grover Washington, Jr.
put down his sax long enough to
select a

painted wooden mask from the Kuba tribe, Central Congo (1930)

from one
of the Museum's storerooms.
November 18, 1999

"This mask really speaks to me. It has a way of drawing you in. The craftsmanship is impeccable. The maker has used many different materials -- metal, beads, designs on the cloth. The size is exciting and the face with all the decorations holds the eye."

The Museum deeply regrets
the passing of Grover Washington, Jr.
His visit to the Museum was truly special.
