Today's work took us to Aksaz sazligi, still very
marshy although the Karasu and Sirakaragaclar rivers
continue to deposit silts along their banks.
Because we are documenting coastal change, it is
important to start our investigation in an area that has
only recently been filled in with soil. We had some
difficulty maintaining our sampling transect and had to
borrow a dinghy from one of the local fishermen.
We successfully documented a series of layers
including recent soils, fresh water marsh and ancient
marine silts by drilling a core nearly 12 meters
deep.
