Day 15
a cool cave

The Journal of the
Black Sea Project

July 15, 1998

Today we continued to work in the inland valley near Dibekli koy, which appears to have been sparsely inhabited in Hellenistic and Roman times (late 4th c. BC - 6th c. AD).

The limestone outcrops in this area provide excellent water sources. At the site of Magara natural fissures in the limestone have been cut back to increase the flow of water. One of the tunnels at Magara has been cut in for 60 meters (180 feet) before it dwindles to a size too small for a grown man to crawl through. These tunnels may be as much as 2000 years old, although the lack of architectural evidence makes it difficult to establish their date.
