Support the Tikal Digital Access Project |
Preserving
the Tikal Archive and providing access to its unique contents via
the web is a monumental task. Preservation of the original records
and access to those records must be simultaneously addressed. The
original records - catalog cards, field notes, maps, drawings, photographs,
etc. - are in need of proper archival storage containers which cannot
be postponed for the digitization project. However, in its current
state and location, the value of this collection is also greatly diminished
by the difficulty in accessing the collection. A great deal of work
lays ahead for the staff of the Tikal Digital Access Project (TDAP).
Our current efforts are focused on:

- Converting the Tikal Project
Card Catalog into a digital catalog that will be searchable online
and provide virtual copies of the original cards. This online
catalog will serve as the foundation for the future digitization
of all the Tikal Archive contents.
- Developing immediate and
innovative access to small segments of the archive via the Online
Exhibits section of the TDAP website
- Cataloging and preserving
the 3,000+ slides, many of which have suffered color loss
- Inventorying and cataloging
the contents of the entire archive in preparation for rehousing
in appropriate archival storage containers

From
1956 to 1970, the Penn Tikal Project was innovative in its field methods
and set standards for recording archaeological and epigraphic data
in Maya archaeology. The Tikal Digital Access Project will strive
to be a model for open access to archaeological data and the exchange
of ideas and information using new technologies. The use of the Internet
to provide access to archaeological records will foster new kinds
of scholarly collaboration and data sharing that will fundamentally
alter our understanding of the Maya past.
This website represents six months of effort on the part of the TDAP
staff and volunteers, made possible by the generous support of grantors
and donors. However, TDAP currently operates without a guaranteed
and consistent source of income. Here is where you can make a difference.
Any contribution, no matter how small, will have an impact on our
ability to preserve and provide access to the Tikal Archive and expand
our understanding of this World Heritage Site. Funds received will
help support the projects listed above as well as the ongoing digitization
of the Tikal Archive collections and acquisition of archival storage
supplies and furniture.
You can make a tax-deductible contribution by contacting the Tikal
Digital Access Project staff at tikal@upenn.edu,
or calling 215-573-1186. You can also support the project by sending
a check in U.S. dollars to:
