Chinese New Year

The Jade River Dancers will perform at the 26th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration at Penn Museum. Photo: Jennifer Chiappardi.

Music, dance and special performances bring the sights, sounds and spectacles of China to Museum galleries and auditoriums at Penn Museum's annual Chinese New Year Celebration. Pictured here: the Jade River Dancers. Photo: Jennifer Gibson.

Chinese food--decorative and edible--is always a featured part of the festivities. Pictured here: Chef Joe Poon returns annually to the Museum to give his ever-popular vegetable carving demonstration, quickly and skillfully turning modest vegetables into flowers, birds, and fanciful scenes.   No Chinese New Year Celebration is quite complete without the traditional lion dance to chase away evil and usher in a year of good luck. Lion dancers and drummers begin inside the Museum and wind their way outside to the courtyard for a firecracker finale. Photo: Paul Hu.
