Limestone votive stela of Ptah from Memphis
(E13579). Dynasty 19 (1292-1190 B.C.).
Ptah was
the local god of Memphis, where he was
worshipped together with his consort Sekhmet
and her son Nefertem. Because of
the importance of the city of Memphis
as a religious capital, Ptah became an important national god. Considered
one of the creator gods who created humankind by means of his speech,
he was always shown as a mummified man wearing a close fitting skull
cap and false beard. He carries a staff, which was a combination
of the was scepter and the djed pillar, symbols of authority and
stability. He was the patron of craftsmen.
