Gods & Goddesses SOBEK The word sobek in ancient Egyptian means "crocodile" and the deity Sobek often took the form of a crocodile or as a man with a crocodile head. Sobek was the chief god of the areas of Fayuum and Kom Ombo. Temples dedicated to the god Sobek may have had sacred lakes in the temple precinct where the resident god (in the form of a crocodile) would be raised. Many mummified crocodiles have been found near temples honoring Sobek. As a Nile creature, the crocodile god Sobek was thought to create the Nile from his own sweat.
