Tell al-Rimah, Iraq Excavation Records

Theresa Howard Carter was born in New York on May 15,1929. She was granted an A.B. from the College of Liberal Arts in 1950. She received her M.A. in Anthropology in 1954 from the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College in 1962. Her field work in the Mediterranean area of the Near East includes two seasons at Leptis Magna (1960, 1961) where she was a field Director, and three seasons at Tell el-Rimah in Northern Iraq (1964, 1965, 1966).

Tell el-Rimah in northern Iraq was excavated in the first three seasons (1964-1966) by a Joint Expedition of the British School of Archaeology in Iraq and the University. The co-directors were D. Oates (British School) and T. H. Carter (University Museum). Carter was responsible for the publication of the objects, found during the first three seasons, and possibly the last two (1967-1968) when the British School was in sole charge of the excavation. The University Museum offered some additional personnel which included D. Crownover and A. H. Trik.

This participation ended in 1966, and Museum interest in archaeological research in Iraq was transferred to a proposed survey and excavation in the vicinity of the Euphrates River. Because the Museum's involvement was limited, the Archives holds very few records.

General correspondence includes the letters of F. Rainey, the director of the Museum and T. H. Carter with D. Oates and other members of the British School regarding the proposed project at Tell el-Rimah. Other correspondence includes a large proportion of letters of D. Crownover.

Where possible, a chronological order was imposed on the Near East records. Photographs were retained with the documents when they directly referred to content. Otherwise, the photographic collections hold material relating to excavations, objects, and travel photographs (see standard size print inventory) Large maps and drawings may be found in the oversize map cabinets and watercolors, smaller, drawings, or materials, in the Print Cabinet (see inventories).
