Description

Dancer or actress. Standing, frontal figure of woman dressed in long Doric peplos which falls in folds to ground leaving only toes exposed. Right hand raised high above head as if holding a hydria on her head. Left arm at side, hand holding up a bit of her dress. Hair: in locks brushed forward on top of head; around forehead it is parted in the middle with wavy strands undulating horizontally; it falls behind down to the lower part of the shoulder and is held together there by a narrow band. At shoulders the overfold of the peplos (apoptygma) is held in place by a hemispherical rosette button. Original found at the Villa dei Papiri, Herculaneum. Copy of a 5th century Greek work.
